A LONG HISTORY

(include) the ruins of Homer’s great city of Troy, Greek and Roman theatres and temples, the churches of Byzantium and the mosques and palaces of the Ottoman Empire.


MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATÜRK, A GREAT LEADER AND REFORMER


Mustafa Kemal Atatürk .......... (be) the father of modern Turkey. He .......... (be) born in 1881. He .......... (choose) the army as a career and in 1915, during World War I, he .......... (lead) the Turkish forces in their defense of Gallipoli and Istanbul. He .......... (end) the war as a hero and the Turkish people .......... (give) him their full support from then onwards. He .......... (lead) the Turkish forces in the War of Independence (1919-1922) and in 1923 .......... (become) the first President of the new Republic of Turkey.

During the last fifteen years of his life Atatürk .......... (introduce) many reforms which made Turkey’s customs and institutions more modern. Now, many years after his death in November 1938, the Turkish people still think of him great respect.

(be) rainforests and tea plantations by the Black Sea, west crop-growing areas on the Anatolian plateau, and dry, desert landscapes in Cappadocia, where ancient buildings are carved out of rock.
