Great Expectations
This novel about Pip's gripping life mirrors the life in mining villages in England in the 19th century. It is reflected in the novel that Joe Gargery, the miner of the village, worked under very difficult conditions, but was still very poor. In the novel, the gap between the villager and the city dweller is also noticed. Because the arrogant attitude of Miss Havisham; Estella's preference to marry a high society person is enough to explain the social structure of the time. The author makes references to the social order based on greed for money and discrimination.
The protagonist of the story is a young man named Philip. He lives with his older sister in a poor village. His biggest friend is his sister's wife, the village blacksmith Joe Gargery. Pip's life begins to change one night when he visits his parents' graves. A man appears before him in the forest and asks him to bring him food. Charles Dickens portrayed this man as a terribly majestic and ugly man. This man will appear again in the novel after a while and this time will change Pip's life. It is understood that this man was a prison escapee. The man asks Pip for something to eat; Pip is so afraid of the man that he can't refuse his request. But when he returns, he sees another strange man there. They fight with the first man. The other man disappears after the fight. Abel Magwitch; that is, the prisoner who escaped from the prison is caught soon. Pip quickly forgets this incident.
Miss Havisham is a lonely woman who lives with her adopted son, Estella. She asks Pip's older sister to send Pip home. Miss Havisham was rejected by the man who would become her husband during the wedding. The breakfast to be eaten on the morning of the wedding night will stand for years with the cake on the table. When Pip visits Miss Havisham, he can't make sense of her strange behavior. Miss Havisham asks Pip to come often and spend time with her stepdaughter. Estella's cold and arrogant demeanor annoys Pip; but despite being angry with Estella, Pip fell in love with her. Since Pip is a very ambitious person, he thinks that one day he will get rid of this poor life. Meanwhile, Pip is left with a legacy by a mysterious person. Pip thinks this inheritance was given to him by Miss Havisham. Pip lives in London in a room with a man named Herber Pocket. His lawyer, Mr. Jaggers, won't say who helped him. Pip is now a gentleman living in London. She is so caught up in this life that she insults her sister's good-hearted husband, who comes to visit her. But after Joe leaves, he regrets it. However, Joe is his biggest supporter in his poor life. Pip learns that he is an escaped convict in London, whom his heir once helped. The knot in his life begins to unravel. Her childhood sweetheart Estella also got married and even lost her husband. But when he escaped from this series of events and came to visit the village, he met Estella. There is no longer any reason for them to leave.
Alongside Great Expectations, the novel "My Valley Was So Green" chronicles the life of miners in Wales.
