Uzbekistan, officially the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbek: Oʻzbekiston Respublikasi), is a country in Central Asia. It is one of the seven independent Turkish states. It is bordered by Kazakhstan in the north, Kyrgyzstan in the northeast, Tajikistan in the southeast, Afghanistan in the south and Turkmenistan in the southwest. Along with Liechtenstein, it is one of two countries that only border landlocked countries. Uzbekistan, a secular and unitary republic, is divided into 12 provinces and one autonomous republic (Karakalpakstan). Its capital is Tashkent. The country has a rich cultural heritage due to its historical importance and strategic location. 85% of the population speaks Uzbek. Russian is used as a lingua franca in the administration and among the different ethnic groups of the country. There are also Tajik and Kazakh minorities. Islam is the most prevalent religion in the country, followed by Russian Orthodoxy at 5%. Most Muslims are non-sectarian
