* What is the difference between laicism and secularism?
Saecularism derives from the Latin word “saeculum” meaning “century”. It originally meant adapting oneself to (the needs of the) century. Today it means separation of state affairs from religion. Laicism has a similar concept but approaches religion differently: It is actually against religion, and it aims to destroy the remaining effects of religion on people. It is provocative, in other words.
* What is the difference between an academic and an academician?
Academy as a term represents a group of learned people together to advance science, art, and literature. Academic means member of an academic instutition such as a university. However, academician means a member of an academy. So, instructors at our universities should be called “academic”, because we do not have an academy in Turkey and thus they are not a member of one.
